VELOPROP SURVEY PROJECT
BICYCLISTS & THE NYPD'S NEW "PARADE PERMIT" REGULATION

As of late February, the NYPD requires bicyclists gathering in groups of 50
or more to obtain a permit in advance. Failure to do so may result in arrest
and charged with the violation of “parading without a permit.”

For law-abiding cyclists, the permit rule poses thorny practical (not to
mention constitutional) questions. If you’re a bike commuter, or on a bike
club ride, you could easily find yourself in crowd of 50 other cyclists on a
busy day, or just passing on the street. Forget about spontaneously riding
with a crowd because you feel like it.

Shouldn’t the City be spending its limited resources (our taxpayers’ dollars)
on improving the transport infrastructure—instead of deterring bicycling through
baroque, cumbersome regulations?

Veloprop (an artist group) thinks the City should be asking bicyclists a whole
different set of questions than those posed on the NYPD’s bizarre permit (click to view) application. You can help us get the message across by filling out this form and sending
it to us at whyiride_permit@mindspring.com.

Your responses will be incorporated into an art work that will be on display
May 3–June 3 at the Lower Eastside Girls Club, 56 East 1st Street, NYC, and
on our web site at www.whyiridenyc.org.

Thanks for your time. We’ll see you on the road!
